TOME BY MARSHALL LACOUNT Mural exhibition July 4 - July 12 2025 Closing reception July 12th, 2-6pm On the corner of Ave D and E 28th St in Flatbush, Brooklyn
Marshall LaCount presents "TOME," a site-specific exhibition of 84 unique wheat-pasted panels on the exterior wall of his neighborhood laundromat in Flatbush, Brooklyn. This 20 by 30 foot installation appropriates the visual language of guerrilla advertising while borrowing from the sharp, fragmented vernacular of meme culture to create a visual and text-based poem that embodies the wry humor, beleaguered camaraderie, collective spirit, and distinctive cultural shorthand of New York City. Using simple means—hand-cut stencils, spray paint, and newsprint—LaCount transforms what we typically associate with street advertising or graffiti into something unexpected. Each panel features a short, evocative phrase such as "SATANIC PANIC," "OH THAT WOULD BE A GOOD BRAND NAME," "SOCIAL CLIMBING" (oriented as if the text itself is climbing), "KINDA BOOTSTRAPSY," "TOTAL GASLIGHT," "YOUR NAME ON A GRAIN OF RICE," "WHITE NONSENSE," and "WHERE EVEN IS THE DARK WEB?" Individually, these panels might present as nonsensical, but assembled together, they transcend the sum of their parts to form what one panel aptly describes as a "LOVE SONG FOR THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK." The text moves fluidly through social and political ideas, cultural phenomena, and rooted expressions that might simply name a tree or a plant. In contrast to the antiseptic digital perfection of corporate advertising, "TOME" features letters and words that fall in and out of focus, are spaced awkwardly, and clearly display their handmade origins. The intentionally erratic, at times ecstatic quality conveys a genuine humanity, offering a playful respite from the constant barrage of products that dominate our city's public and private walls. Ultimately, "TOME" articulates a dizzying range of ideas in a form that is both digestible and slyly rigorous, dismissing tyrants and affirming community in a joyful mosaic that is at once literal and abstract. A full-size magazine documenting each panel will be available online and at the closing reception, along with refreshments.
